Crooms Academy alumni to hold Grand Reunion

The Historic Crooms Grand Reunion will be held Dec. 27-29, with the theme, “Moving Forward with Pride and Dignity, Let the Record Show.”

The Planning Committee is finalizing plans for the third celebration of the special heritage shared by all alumni of the historic period of Crooms Academy/High School, 1926-1970. It will be a time for all classmates and schoolmates to come together to celebrate the memories and shared experiences of being a part of a unique and profound experience.

Crooms classmates and schoolmates are invited to attend. Come and enjoy friends and schoolmates who can relate to how we made it through and have shared a portion of your journey from then to now.

This is the third Grand Reunion, starting with Grand Reunion 2007, followed by Grand Reunion 2010. Both were successful and well attended. The word “historic” has been added to the name to reflect who we are, the students and teachers of Crooms Academy/High School from 1926-1970.

We all have made Crooms special and it has done the same for us.

The cost of this year’s celebration is $100 per person, in keeping with the previous celebrations. The committee asks that you make your reservation to attend and send your payment as soon as possible. They are accepting partial payments, but final payment must be received no later than Dec. 17. To insure the best experience for our attendees, no payments will be accepted at the door. As a courtesy to others and to insure full funding of contracted activities, no refunds will be given. There will be free components of the celebration and everyone is encouraged to participate.

The schedule of events is as follows: Friday, December 27: Registration from 8:30 a.m.-11 a.m. at Crooms Academy of Information Technology, 2200 Historic Goldsboro Boulevard. 11:15 a.m.- 4 p.m., picnic, (western attire); 4 p.m.-until, class break-outs (individual classes in charge of their own break-out session). Saturday, December 28, 10 a.m.-11 a.m., Grand Reunion Parade and Rally from Historic Goldsboro Boulevard and William Clark Avenue to Crooms Academy; 11:15 a.m.-6 p.m., class break-outs; 6 p.m.-until, Banquet and Dance at the Sanford Civic Center, 401 E. Seminole Boulevard, downtown Sanford (colors, red and white). Sunday, December 29, Worship Service and Brunch at 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Sanford Civic Center. The Crooms Memorabilia Room will be open for tours on Saturday, December 28.

The Goldsboro Museum and Goldsboro Welcome Center will be open for tours on Friday, December 27 and Saturday, December 28. The parade, rally and worship service are free events, open to the public. The ladies are asked to wear red and white or a combination of the two for the banquet and dance; gentlemen are encouraged to wear red or white accessories with a dark suit to coordinate with the ladies.

After the Sunday Worship Service, brunch is free to those choosing Option 1; those choosing other options must pay $10 for brunch. Option 1, the full Reunion Package, includes all events, souvenir shirt/tote bag; cost, $100 per person. Option 2 includes the banquet and free events; cost, $50 per person. Option 3 includes the picnic and free events, cost, $35 per person.

• The Crooms Academy High School Extraordinary Class of 1963 will celebrate their 50th Year Reunion, with the theme,“Together, We Achieve the Extraordinary”.

Reunion President Sheralyn J. Brinson stated, “It’s hard to believe it’s been 50 years since we were students at Crooms Academy. My, how time flies! But we must say, the lessons we learned at Crooms were indeed life-long lessons; we fondly remember the time we spent there and we are pleased to announce the 50th Year celebration events to be held at the Midway Community Center.”

Two events are scheduled, Sunday evening, December 29, Welcome & Re-acquaintance/Casual Night, “60’s Style” (suggested attire: ban lon shirts, khaki pants, converse sneakers, pleated skirts, bobby socks, sheath dresses/skirts, etc.). Monday evening, December 30, Dinner Dance (color theme: white & gold).

Ms. Brinson stated, “Our 50th Year Reunion promises to be memorable as once again we “Enter the Realm of the Extraordinary”, sharing fond memories of our days at Dear Old Crooms Academy with classmates, teachers, family and friends.”

Planning meetings are held on the first Saturday of each month, 4 p.m. at 1800 W. Fourth Street.

• Second Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church’s Men and Women’s Conference will be held August 30-31, 2013, with the theme, “Preparing for the Harvest – the King is Coming”, taken from Revelation 22:12-14.

The conference begins Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m., with a Hallelujah Praise Service at Second Shiloh Baptist Church, 1925 Airport Boulevard. Conference sessions on Saturday, August 31, will be held at the Canterbury Retreat Center in Oviedo, from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
