Special to the Herald
Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida, Inc. (LRRoF), a 501(c)(3) organization committed to rescuing and rehoming Labrador Retriever (Labs) dogs, is celebrating its 25th year of success. LRRoF works with local communities and animal welfare organizations to rescue, foster, and place Labs in need of new homes. According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), Labrador Retrievers were the most popular dog breed for 31 years prior to 2024. Labs are also one of the most reproduced dogs in the U.S., and thus, the most prevalent breeds in shelters across the country.
Since its founding in 2000, LRRoF has placed over 12,000 Labs in homes making it one of the most successful breed-specific rescues in Florida. Over the years, hundreds of individuals and families have fostered homeless dogs and more than 200 volunteers work tirelessly to ensure a seamlessly-run organization that benefits the dogs. LRRoF comprises nine districts throughout the state of Florida who work together to bring Labs to safety, ensure proper medical attention, and find adoptive families.
“Labs come to us for a number of reasons whether they are abandoned, abused, stray, or surrendered. At LRRoF, our primary goal is to bring these dogs back to health, reduce their stress, and find them permanent homes where they will be loved and cherished,” according to Christina Frisbee-Clark, LRRoF’s President. “It takes a village to run an organization such as this and in addition to funding, our greatest need is for foster families who are able to love and house a Lab for a short period of time while we vet adoptive families.”
LRRoF works with shelters in Florida when a Lab arrives and volunteers transport the dog to partner veterinarians to ensure the dog’s health and address any medical needs. The dog then goes into a foster home and awaits the perfect adoptive home. The LRRoF adoption process includes an application, a home visit, and a meet and greet to ensure that adoptive families and homes are a good match.
Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to placing Labrador Retrievers in loving, permanent homes, throughout Florida.
