SANFORD — The weather was chilly, but the action was hot this past weekend on Lake Monroe as the Lake Monroe Sailing Association (LMSA) held a pair of big events.
First up was the rescheduled Mother’s Arms Challenge that was postponed because of the effects of Hurricane Milton last October.
Held on Saturday, this unique race was through the river of grass at the east end of Lake Monroe. Competitors sailed in flat water, with the top half of there sails catching the wind over the wetlands.
In the end it was Terry Warren on his Planing Boat “Running With Scissors” coming out on top of a field of eight boats.
Warren won by just under 6-minutes over Andy Forrest on Show Me, which also claimed first place in Displacement Boat, and Ol’Yeller under Max Perez. James Pompi on Zx came home fourth and was the top Multihull Boat finisher.
Then on Sunday, seven sailors returned to the lakefront to take part in the January edition of the Sine Metu Jameson Irish Whiskey Race and it was veteran Fisk Hayden and crew on Gen 4 taking the overall title and first place in Displacement Boat by 2-1/2 minutes over Forrest and Show Me, which again finished second, and Warren, this time on his unnamed Multihull Boat.
