It’s getting really interesting for Seminole County hopes for an FHSAA State Championship in the Winter Sports Season.
After last week’s play in the Regional Tournaments, local hopes are down to just seven teams in soccer and basketball.
The Oviedo High School boys (15-3-3) and Lake Mary High School girls (17-3-2) both won Regional Championships last week and are competing at the State Finals at Soccer Stadium Field in the Lake Myrtle Sports Park in Auburndale.
The Rams girls have yet to give up a goal in the playoffs, besting Apopka (8-0) and West Orange (4-0) in the District Tournament, and blanking Hagerty, 6-0, in the Regional Quarterfinals and 1-0 over both Timber Creek in the Semifinals and Winter Park in the Class 7A-Region 1 Championship Game last Wednesday.
After edging the previously unbeaten Wolves in overtime, Lake Mary took an early (13th minute) lead against the Wildcats when Ava McKay crossed from wide left to Anna Voigt, who ripped the ball into the goal.
Rams goalkeeper Laura Walker preserved the shutout with a marvelous stop on a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
The girls, who are playing in the Final 4 for the first time since 2019, faced Palm Harbor University Monday afternoon and the winner of that contest will battle the winner of the other semifinal between Jupiter and Weston-Cypress Creek in the State Championship Game on Friday at 1 p.m.
The Lions boys continue to survive in amazingly tough contests and won their first Regional Championship since 2014 beating host Wiregrass Ranch in a shootout 4-3, with freshman keeper Madrick Muina making the key stop on the final penalty kick attempt by the hosts, to claim the Class 6A-Region 2 Championship.
The two teams had battled to a 3-3 tie after regulation and two overtime periods, despite Oviedo playing a man down for half of the second half and overtime, rallying from a goal down twice.
The Lions will challenge Mandarin from Jacksonville in the State Semifinals on Thursday at 1 p.m., following a 10 a.m. semifinal matchup between Mitchell from New Port Richey and Olympic Heights from Boca Raton.
The winners will advance to Saturday’s Championship Final on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile in Basketball,
Seminole County squads took a big hit, with only five teams making it out of the Regional Quarterfinals.
In Boys, Seminole (7A), Lake Howell (6A) and The Master’s Academy (2A) played Regional Semifinals on Monday, while the Lake Howell (6A) and Altamonte Christian (1A) girls played their Semifinals on Tuesday.
The Boys Regional Championship Games will be played on Thursday and the Girls’ finals on Friday.
