OCALA — Over two beautiful days (Monday and Tuesday, February 17-18) at the Country Club of Ocala, three teams emerged victorious in the Florida State Golf Association’s (FSGA) season final team Winter Series event _ the Four-Ball Tournament. Mark Allen and Cortland Schofield won in the Mid-Amateur division, Steve Riviere and Rod Bayliss in the Senior division, and Sanford native Bobby Lundquist and Robert Cunningham in the Super-Senior division.
Super-Senior Division
The team of Lundquist/Cunningham held the solo lead in the Super-Senior division after the first round after firing a three-under 69. Bradley Rollinson and John Milton were close behind after their two-under 70 on Monday.
After a slow start, five birdies in seven holes would allow Lundquist/Cunningham to extend their lead Tuesday morning and essentially pull away from the field in the Super-Senior division. A late push by a couple of other teams would not be enough as the duo would secure first place by two shots at six-under par. In a tie for second at four-under par finished the teams of Mark Taylor and Thomas Donovan and Doug Snoap and Jack Jackson.
“You never know when your last win will be!” said Lundquist. “This was very satisfying because we beat a bunch of 65 year old ‘young guys’! Robert and I are both 74!”
Mid-Amateur Division
In the Mid-Amateur division, there was a three-way tie for the lead at two-under par 70 after the first round. The teams comprised of Chris MacLellan and Brandon Casler, Ivan Heller and Chris McCracken, and Mark Allen and Cortland Schofield.
Shankar Natarajan, who has previously won two Winter Series events this season, sat one shot out of the lead with his partner Scott Manie heading into the final round.
In round two, the team of Nilo Sanchez and Cade Alfieri stormed up the leaderboard with five birdies in their first 12 holes. With just six holes remaining in the final round, three teams sat atop the leaderboard at five-under par. Round one co-leaders Allen/Schofield would come out of the pack victorious at six-under-par total. Natarajan/Manie and Sanchez/Alfieri would tie for second place one shot back of our victors.
Senior Division
Seven teams would shoot under par in the Senior division during the first round on Monday. Steve Riviere and Rod Bayliss and Bruce Sands and Bob Murphy led the way after both shooting four-under-par 68. The team of Scott Thul and Thomas Lowe sat one shot back after a three-under-par 69.
Riviere/Bayliss took control of the Senior leaderboard on Tuesday after making a couple of birdies in the middle of their second round. A steady finish free of any mistakes would secure them the Senior division by two shots over round one co-leaders Sands/Murphy.
Here are the Super-Senior Division results:
