Sanford natives and Seminole High School alumni Bobby Lundquist, Kaylan Wiggins and Niki Washington put the city and Seminole County in the news not only locally, but nationwide and worldwide as well.

A year after losing the title by a single stroke, Lundquist, a star athlete at Seminole High and the University of Florida before becoming a highly-successful coach and Oviedo High School Principal, won the Legends Division at the 2025 Florida Azalea Senior Amateur at Palatka Golf Club, posting a 4-under-par score, to better Greg Osborne of Lititz, Pennsylvania, who finished in solo second place at 2-under-par.

Kaylan Wiggins, the son of Sanford City Commissioner Kerry Wiggins Sr. and a former star quarterback at Seminole High, FIU and Southeastern University and currently a Recruiting Assistant for the University of Miami, has decided to return to his personal athletic pursuits, signing to play for the Prague (Czech Republic) Black Panthers of the AFL (Austrian Football League), the 2024 Austrian Bowl XXXIX CHAMPIONS and the winner of the 12 Czech Championship titles.

“I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to come to the beautiful City of Prague and compete for an AFL Title within a championship organization,” Wiggins posted on his Facebook Page. “I’m looking forward to showcasing my talents and enjoying the vibrant culture and sights that Prague has to offer.”

Washington, meanwhile, did her work behind the scenes, helping lead the George Mason University women’s basketball team to its first-ever Atlantic 10 Championship with a dominant 73-58 victory over Saint Joseph's at the Henrico Sports & Events Center in Virginia last Sunday. With the win, the Patriots secured their first NCAA Tournament berth in program history, cementing themselves as a rising power in the conference.

The Associate Head Coach & Director of Analytics for GMU has also coached at Seminole State, Florida A&M, Illinois State and Lynn University, serving six seasons as head coach (2009-15) at the Boca Raton school, and Bethune-Cookman University.
