A distinguished group of city officials, members of local organizations, media and supporters of the community redevelopment project recently gathered for an exclusive invitation-only garden party to introduce a new conceptual garden plan. This exciting new addition to Sanford will sit on the 1 and ½ acre site surrounding the Sanford Museum, an area rich with history and a special connection to the city’s founder, Henry S. Sanford.
The garden will honor Sanford’s roots and its founder’s passion for horticulture, featuring Florida native plants, tropical varieties, a pollinator garden, a rose garden, and a collection of Florida upland plants. The garden’s design offers a unique opportunity to walk through and explore the future of Sanford’s botanical heritage.
Keith Oropeza, PLA, ASLA, of GAI Consultants, will serve as Director of Landscape Architecture. Oropeza has crafted an innovative landscape plan that showcases Sanford’s deep historical connection to gardening. Henry S. Sanford’s test gardens, once the site of hundreds of plants he brought to Central Florida, will serve as the inspiration for this modern-day garden.
The garden party will also showcase the planned annex building, a multi-use event space designed by Jerry Walker Mills, LLC. The building will be built to complement the garden’s serene and reflective environment, making it an ideal venue for future events and gatherings.
”We envision this space as a place where nature, history, and the arts come together to tell the story of Sanford,” said Robin Theisen, founding member of the Sanford Cultural Guild “It’s a project that will serve as both a beautiful public space and a testament to Sanford’s commitment to preserving its rich history and fostering creativity within the community.
“The event is sponsored by the Sanford Cultural Guild, an organization dedicated to promoting arts, culture, and history in Sanford. The guild’s founding members, Robin Theisen, Caroline van den Berg, and Sarah Clore, have been instrumental in bringing this vision to life, and their continued support ensures the success of future projects within the community.
For those interested in supporting this and other initiatives led by the Sanford Cultural Guild, including the organization’s main fundraiser, the Sanford Historic Garden Tour of Homes, on April 5, are encouraged to visit their website at SanfordCulturalGuild.org
