An Orlando resident has died after a wrong-way crash on I-4 resulted in one fatality and several other injuries in the early morning hours of Saturday, Mar 15.
The crash, which involved a semi tractor-trailer and two other vehicles, occurred on I-4 near mile marker 94. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash began as a 2012 Honda Accord was travelling eastbound in the westbound center lane, causing it to collide head-on with a 2025 Honda Odyssey. Reports indicate that the Odyssey contained five individuals, including two children, ages 1 and 3.
After the initial collision, the Accord ran off the road and hit the median guardrail, while the Odyssey veered right into the path of a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene at 3:57 a.m.. The driver of the Honda Accord, a 36-year-old Orlando man, was transported to Advent Health Altamonte Springs and pronounced deceased. Troopers report that it is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The occupants of the Honda Odyssey were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center, with the driver and two passengers suffering serious injuries. The FHP crash report indicates that four out of the five people in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, and that the children involved were transported with thankfully minor injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 58-year-old man from Port Orange, was also wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and emerged from the wreck uninjured. Reports indicate that he remained on the scene as FHP responded and began to close down the section of I-4 where the crash had occurred.
Given that the Florida Highway Patrol’s investigation is still ongoing, the causes behind the crash are still unknown. No conclusions have been drawn regarding why the driver of the Honda Accord was driving the wrong way to begin with, leading to the multi-vehicle crash that resulted in his death and the injury of several others, including two young children.
