US Daughters of 1812 holds grave marking for founding officer

The Major Francis L. Dade Chapter, US Daughters of 1812 held a grave marking at All Souls Catholic Cemetery on April 11.

The event was held to honor the service of Hortense Weidman Roumillat who was a charter member and first chapter historian.

The chapter was founded in October 1948. Chapter President Madelda Thompson welcomed guests and members. Invocation was given by Chaplain Shirley Connley.

Vice President Linda Rinker read the Purposes of the Society and Historian Kay McGee presented remembrances of Hortense.

A wreath with blue and silver ribbons and white carnations was in place along with a bouquet of white carnations resting on the grave.

Family members attending were Hortense Roumillat’s grandchildren and their spouses: Lamar and David Spalding, Jim and Susie McLeod, and Scott McLeod. Mary Valente, Manager of Cemetery Operation for All Souls Catholic Church was also in attendance.

Members and guests gathered for lunch afterwards where Hortense’s grandchildren recounted charming stories of Hortense.
