A Love Letter to Sanford: Where the Journey Began

A Love Letter to Sanford: Where the Journey Began

By Lin Green

The first time I laid eyes on Sanford, I felt as though I had stepped into the pages of a storybook. Driving off the interstate and onto its local roads, I was immediately drawn to the charm of this quaint little town. The historic homes, with their wraparound porches and grand presence, reminded me of scenes from My Girl—a realization that later made perfect sense when I discovered the movie had been filmed here. Details I share in my memoir, Enough with the Secrets Mama! But beyond its picturesque streets and rich history, there was something else—something intangible yet deeply felt. A sense of belonging. A sense of purpose.

I came to Sanford with a mission: to serve the juvenile population as a case manager for the Department of Juvenile Justice. It was an opportunity that excited me, not just because of the work itself, but because of what I saw in this community—a deep-rooted commitment to its youth. From the very beginning, I met those born and raised here, people who shared the same passion I did, and turned best of friends until this day. They, too, believed in building up the dreams of young people, in creating pathways to success where roadblocks once stood.

As I settled into my role, I quickly realized the potential within the community. There were so many possibilities for programs that could uplift children and families, providing them with the support and resources they  needed to thrive. I saw the impact that collaboration could have, how a shared vision could create meaningful change. This was more than just a job—it was the start of something bigger. Sanford welcomed me with open arms, and in return, I dedicated myself to its children and families. That commitment has only grown over the years, evolving into a lifelong mission of advocacy and community building. This town, with its undeniable charm and resilient spirit, became the foundation for the work I continue to do today.

This is just the beginning of my story in The Sanford Herald, where I hope to share not only my journey but also the stories of the incredible people who make this town what it is. Sanford is more than a place; it’s a community full of heart, history, and hope. And I’m honored to be a part of it.
