Join the 4th Annual Sanford’s Ride to Freedom – May 17, at 7 a.m. sponsored by various business and community sponsors.
More than a bike ride — it’s a ride through history.
Celebrate Florida’s Emancipation Day with a scenic and meaningful cycling event through Sanford’s historic communities, including Georgetown, Goldsboro, and new this year — Bookertown and Midway. You'll also ride past landmarks like the Sanford Riverwalk and Sanford/Orlando International Airport.
What is Emancipation Day? On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing enslaved people in the Southern states. It was not until May 20, 1865, that the state of Florida was finally freed and the Emancipation Proclamation was actually in effect.
