LOCAL ALL-AMERICAN DERBY

   The City of Sanford Recreation Services Department and Central Florida Soap Box Derby 2024-2025 Rally/Derby Season will come to an end on Saturday, May 17, with the running of the 36th All-American Soap Box Derby Local Race, that will decide the three individuals that will represent Sanford and the CFSBD at the 87th FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby.

   There is still have room for racers ages 7-19. No experience or car necessary. A great chance to come see what derby is all about and compete for the chance to represent Central Florida in Akron.

   Check in will be at 7 a.m., with racing beginning at 8 a.m. and the event will consist of a Double Elimination race for each class.

   Once again, the three division winners in Stock, Super Stock and Masters will earn a spot in the First Energy All-American Soap Box Derby at Derby Downs in Akron the week of July 13-through-July 19.

   Following the races, the group will move to Downtown Sanford and the Sanford Civic Center for a banquet and Awards Ceremony.

   Everyone, especially interested non-racers, is invited to attend any of the family friendly events, free of charge, at the beautiful Mike Kirby Park facility located on the west side of Sanford on Oregon Avenue, north off of CR-46A (25th Street/H. E. Thomas Parkway) or east off of Rinehart Road, just south of the GreeneWay entry. The track is East of Bentley Elementary School.

SSC SOFTBALL

   The Seminole State College of Florida softball team (42-16, 25-14 Citrus Conference) stretched its winning streak to eight games in Ocala on Monday (April 278) with an 11-3 victory over the College of Central Florida before the scheduled second game was rained out.

   The Raiders then closed out the Regular Season last Wednesday (April 30) in Gainesville for a make-up game with Santa Fe College and fell 9-5 in 8-innings.

   The FCSAA Division I Softball Championship opened on Tuesday (May 6) at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater. All games will be streamed live on the FCSAA Digital Network.

SANFORD ADULT SOFTBALL

   Here is the upcoming schedule in the City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department Adult Softball Spring Season.

   The Semi-Co-Ed/Fun League tonight (Wednesday) has Fusion playing the doubleheader against Throwbacks at 6:30 p.m. and Pat’s Liquor at 7:30 p.m. and The West End Trading Company facing Wet Spot at 8:30 p.m.

   The Men’s League on Tuesday (May 13) has the West End Trading Company facing the Titans at 6:30 p.m. and the Bokey Batters challenging Venezolanos en Sanford at 7:30 p.m.

ORLANDO VALKYRIES

   For the first time in franchise history, the Orlando Valkyries (17-10) have completed a reverse sweep, finishing off an unbelievable comeback over the Grand Rapids Rise (11-16) by set scores of 19-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 16-14 in Michigan last Wednesday (April 30) and faced a quick turnaround to Vegas on Friday (May 2), before the playoffs start on May 9.

ORLANDO PRIDE

   The Orlando Pride (5-1-0, 15 points) traveled cross country to take on the Portland Thorns last Saturday (May 3) at Providence Park and will be in Cary this Saturday to face the North Carolina Courage at First Horizon Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on ION.

ORLANDO CITY

   Orlando City SC (4-2-4, 17 points) traveled to take on Chicago Fire FC at Soldier Field last Saturday (May 3).

   The Lions will be in St. Petersburg tonight (Wednesday) to face the Tampa Bay Rowdies at 7:30 p.m. at Al Lang Stadium as part of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
