Jesus Christ Superstar, with music by Andrew Lloyd Weber and lyrics by Tim Rice, is a thrilling rock opera based on the last of week Jesus’ life.
What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 50 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the musical follows the last week of Jesus Christ’s life.
The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire.
The iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.” A true global phenomenon and a perfect pick for schools, community theaters and professionals alike, this show continues to touch new generations of audiences and performers. The cast features diverse and talented actor/singer/dancer/musicians who are eager to tell this story of the radical acceptance and love that Jesus Christ stood for.
Jesus Christ Superstar is directed by Tara Kromer. Rounding out the creative team is Justin Adams as the music director, Johnny Jones as assistant director and costume designer, Chris Payen as choreographer, Bill Warriner as the fight choreographer, Desiree Montes as intimacy coordinator, Zoe Brown as stage manager, and Kenzie Roberts as assistant stage manager.
Opening Friday, May 23 at Theater West End in historic downtown Sanford and runs through June 15. Tickets start at just $25 per person.
