As I begin this month celebrating my own Birthday, No, No No, a woman never tells her age, I thought about Sanford’s Birth story. Nestled along the southern shore of Lake Monroe, Sanford, Florida, has long been considered one of Central Florida’s best-kept secrets. But to those who know it intimately, Sanford is more than charming brick streets and a scenic waterfront—it's a city with a rich past, a resilient heart, and a promising future. This month, Sanford: The Sweet Spot celebrates the story of our city's birth, its growth, and what lies ahead for this vibrant community.
Sanford’s story began in the 1870s, when General Henry Shelton Sanford purchased over 12,000 acres of land along the St. Johns River with the vision of creating a hub for agriculture, commerce and culture. His dream bore fruit quickly. Sanford became known as “The Gateway City to South Florida,” serving as a key transportation and shipping center. The city’s fertile soil gave rise to thriving citrus groves and celery farms - earning it the title “Celery Capital of the World.”
The early 20th century saw Sanford flourish with industry and diversity. Its waterfront bustled with steamboats, and the city became home to a vibrant African-American community whose culture and contributions shaped the city’s identity. Goldsboro, one of the first Black-incorporated towns in Florida, was annexed into Sanford in 1911—a chapter in our history that is now being reclaimed and honored through storytelling, revitalization efforts, and cultural preservation.
In the middle of Sanford’s journey came challenges, as shifts in transportation, the decline of agriculture, and economic changes swept through. But Sanford never stopped evolving. The bones of its historic downtown remained strong, waiting for revitalization. And that revival came—slowly at first, then all at once. Today, the Historic Downtown is alive with independent restaurants, breweries, art galleries, and community events that attract visitors from across the region.
What was once a quiet corner is now one of Central Florida’s most desired places to live, work and play. The Riverwalk provides a picturesque setting for morning jogs and evening strolls. The Orlando-Sanford International Airport, Amtrak and Sunrail welcomes travelers from around the globe as we see an increase in tourism. And a spirit of entrepreneurship thrives, with new businesses popping up alongside century-old landmarks.
As we drive through our community we can see so much change on the horizon. Looking to the future, Sanford is poised for thoughtful growth. Development is rising, but so is the community’s commitment to maintaining the city’s unique character. Conversations around affordable housing, smart infrastructure, and sustainable practices are happening at every level. The legacy of neighborhoods like Georgetown, Midway and Goldsboro continues to guide the city’s heart, ensuring that progress doesn’t come at the cost of identity.
As we celebrate Sanford’s past and embrace its future, one thing remains constant—this city knows how to rise, reimagine, and renew. Our city continues to be a place where history and hope meet. As the saying goes “All Roads lead to Sanford”
