SANFORD — One of the best and most competitive seasons ever in a City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department sponsored Adult Softball League came to a close this past week three teams earning recognition.
This year’s Spring League had surprisingly good weather, with only three nights total having problems with rain or lightning, and only one whole night being cancelled, and the play on the field was very good, as all of the teams were competitive this season from top to bottom.
The Wednesday Night Semi-Coed Spring League actually came to a close on June 4 with Pat's Liquor Leaf & Wine capping a perfect 10-0 regular season by also winning the Post Season Tournament.
But despite the unbeaten record, maintaining an unblemished league mark was not that easy as the team had two one-run and several come-from-behind victories before clinching the Regular Season title on the final night of the season.
Then in the tournament, Pat’s had a big inning late in its semifinal to hold off the Throwbacks (2-9), 11-6, and then in the Championship Game, scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning before the offense disappeared and needed a couple of big defensive plays to preserve a 7-6 victory over Fusion (9-3).
The Tuesday Night Men’s Spring League was even better, with all four teams separated by just three games and the top three squads within a game of each other.
There was also a strange situation in the league as The Titans and Venezolanos en Sanford tied for the regular season title with 6-4 records, but The Titans claimed the crown by beating VES all three times they played, meaning The Titans only went 3-4 against the rest of the league.
Venezolanos en Sanford (8-4) would get its revenge in the Post Season Tournament, which was played this past Tuesday, as after edging The West End Trading Company (5-6), 14-12, in the semifinals, they bolted out to an 11-0 lead in the top of the first inning and held off The Titans (7-5), 16-8, in the Championship Game.
The next City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department Adult Softball Season, the Fall League, will start the first week of October at Pinehurst Park on West 24th Street, and new teams are always welcome.
