School may be out, but the lessons linger. The chatter in the hallways has quieted. Classrooms sit still. The final grades are in, and summer break has officially arrived. But even as backpacks are tossed into closets and alarm clocks are silenced, one thing remains steady: the impact of those who teach, guide, and inspire.
Some of the most profound lessons in life don’t come from textbooks. They come from the people who stand beyond the chalkboard—those who see a child not just for who they are, but for who they can become.
As a former student who immigrated to this country not knowing a word of English, I still carry with me the voices of educators who saw my potential before I knew how to name it. They spoke life into me when I was too shy to speak for myself. They handed me books that became passports to places I had never dreamed of. They taught me that literacy is not just about reading words—it’s about unlocking worlds.
This summer, as we celebrate sunshine, rest, and renewal, I invite you to also reflect on the unsung heroes who carry the mission of education far beyond the school year. People like Mrs. Mullins—my childhood teacher whose frailty did not overshadow her fierce ability to ignite brilliance in a room. Her resilience, her passion, and her unwavering belief in me sparked a lifelong love for language and storytelling.
Educators like her remind us that the classroom doesn’t end at the walls that contain it. True learning spills over into letters, life choices, and legacies. It’s in the handwritten notes we save, the books we carry from childhood to adulthood, and the silent courage we borrow when facing the world.
In the coming weeks, I’ll be sitting down with a local Seminole County education leader whose work champions the wellness of our students and the well-being of our teachers. Because just like students, educators, too, need nurturing. And the ones who nurture others must first be reminded that they matter, not just during the school year, but in every season.
So as the summer sun beams down and children splash into new adventures, let’s take a moment to say thank you to the people who made learning magical—and who still do. May we honor them not only with gratitude, but by paying it forward.
Stay inspired. Stay curious. And always, keep turning the page.
