There are moments in leadership that no boardroom, classroom or networking event can prepare you for...the quiet storms inside you, the weight of decisions, the ache of compassion fatigue. And then, there are moments with horses that bypass words entirely and go straight to the soul.
In 2020 through Leadership Seminole, I experienced one of those moments. Not in a lecture hall. Not in a strategy session. But at a ranch with my feet in the dirt, heart open, and a horse beside me who simply… stood there, and connected.
Firstly what is Leadership Seminole?
Leadership Seminole is more than a leadership development program, it’s a journey of community awareness, professional connection, and lasting impact through legacy projects. Through immersive experiences and community collaboration, participants grow both professionally and personally, discovering how to lead with empathy, authenticity, and purpose.
One such experience took place at Crossroads Corral, a local nonprofit that uses equine-assisted therapy to support veterans, youth, and community leaders alike.
Located in Longwood, Crossroads Corral is a sanctuary for healing. Their mission is to promote personal growth, hope, and empowerment through equine-assisted therapy.

Whether you're a veteran healing from trauma, a teen working through anxiety, or a leader learning to listen more deeply; Crossroads provides a safe space to feel seen, without needing to say many words.
Being there with my cohort from Leadership Seminole reminded me of the power of presence. Horses mirror our nervous systems they respond not to our titles or resumes, but to our energy. That alone is a masterclass in leadership.
Another unforgettable moment in my leadership journey came at Miraval Arizona during an equine therapy session that revealed more than I expected.
I was challenged to lead a large horse around a prayer circle. No matter how hard I tried, she wouldn’t budge. The harder I pulled, the more resistant she became. I had to pause. Reflect. Recalibrate my energy. After deep inner work, grounding exercises, and guided support, I approached again not with force, but with aligned intention. And the horse...can you imagine she followed me gently, step by step, right at my pace around the entire prayer circle.
That moment was transformational. Horses sense what we need to learn. They carry their own stories and pain, and somehow, they know how to hold space for ours. This session showed me both my strengths and blind spots as a leader and it forever changed how I show up.
Another healing haven is The First Ranch Foundation founded by Kerul Kessel, a gifted equine therapist and leadership coach. Their ranch provides tailored equine experiences for:
• Individuals with disabilities
• Youth navigating trauma or emotional challenges
• Veterans managing PTSD
• Leaders, teams, and organizations
With Kerul’s guidance, you’ll uncover hidden patterns in your leadership approach; challenges you may not even know exist. And as your team connects with the horses and each other, something remarkable happens: synchronicity. Watch your group align to what your mission truly is.
Whether you’re an executive, educator, nonprofit director, or advocate leadership is emotional labor. We are often holding so much for others. Equine therapy gives us a chance to:
• Regulate the nervous system
• Build trust with self and others
• Practice calm, grounded communication
• Receive healing in nature, in stillness
