Inmate Death Being Investigated in Seminole County

An investigation in Seminole County is taking place regarding the altercation that led to inmate Matthew Wilson’s death. It is believed that injuries from a physical altercation with another inmate caused the fatality.

The incident at John E. Polk Correctional Facility started with a verbal conflict that turned into a physical fight at approximately 7 p.m. on July 16. Wilson struck his head on the ground during this fight, but did not seek help immediately, according to police.

There was also no report on file of the incident happening. He reported severe pain in his head to deputies about 2 hours later. The medical staff evaluated Wilson and then called 911 for further medical attention to the injuries. Sadly, all efforts to save his life failed and he was pronounced deceased on July 18, at 10:42 a.m.

Police say that the footage of the fight shows the other inmate acting in self-defense, so he will not see additional counts of violating probation charges. Wilson was originally at the facility for multiple counts of violating probation.
