With the FHSAA football season taking break to get ready for this week’s Regional Quarterfinals, four Seminole County Private Schools took part in the next round of the Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA) Playoffs on Friday.
The biggest game of the week was an inter-county matchup between The Master’s Academy and Orangewood Christian at Pennington Field in Oviedo and it was the host Eagles surviving in a 29-28 victory over the Rams.
With the victory, TMA earned a spot in the 11-Man Class 3A Semifinals and kept its hopes of a third consecutive State Championship alive.
Things did not go quite as well for the other two local squads as The Geneva School saw its two-game winning streak snapped in a 39-19 loss to Bishop McLaughlin High School in Spring Hill in 11-Man Class 1A and Lake Mary Prep was outscored by Saint Francis Catholic Academy from Gainesville, 54-48, in the 8-Man Class 1A Championships.
Meanwhile, five Seminole Athletic Conference teams learned on Friday that they have earned spots in the FHSAA Regional Quarterfinals.
While District Champions Lake Mary and Oviedo knew they were going to the Postseason, now they, along with Hagerty, Seminole and Winter Springs, now know who and where they will be playing this Friday.
If not for Creekside upsetting Mandarin in Class 7A-District 1, all four 7A-District 3 teams would have made the playoffs, because Lake Brantley was seeded No. 8 in Region 1, but the Patriots were replaced by Creekside because it had won a District Championship.
Lake Mary, the Class 7A-District 3 Champion, will be the lone local team to play at home in the Regional Quarterfinals.
Oviedo could have hosted as the Class 6A-District 4 champs, but the Lions were only seed No. 8 and will travel to No. 1 seeded Buchholz at Citizens Field in Gainesville at 7 p.m.
