Brittany Bundy of Geneva began Barefoot Acres Homeschool as an extension of her love for teaching children and a desire to share with others.
Bundy has already been homeschooling her children for the last 10 years and absolutely loves it but felt she could offer more opportunities to neighboring kids.
“Personally, I am an Integrative Health Practitioner, but my children are my first and most important job in these years,” she cited. “I want to be so present with them and bring families into their lives.”
The family has lived in Seminole County now for about a year and a half but in Florida for some two years.
Although Bundy wrote the curriculum from scratch, it’s very detailed and has many activities focused around crafts and activities.
“Our homeschool farm school enriches by providing hands-on education that connects students to nature, agriculture and sustainable living,” she said. “We bring families together through shared learning experiences that preserve local values and caring for the world around us. By teaching stewardship and self-sufficiency, we help strengthen Seminole County’s future.”
Currently, Barefoot Acres Homeschool offers a one day teaching farm course, but next year the plan is to increase to three days a week to support for homeschool families.
According to Bundy, a typical homeschool day begins as the children arrive and they start in groups, then they split off into additional groups and do morning chores. The students then move onto a lesson and craft projects. Later the children eat lunch together and then the day is concluded after the meal.
“Right now we offer only farm classes,” Bundy said. “Basically we are teaching the children how to care for animals. We’ve done unit studies on each individual animal that we have. Next year we’re looking forward to adding more of your basic classes like math and language arts incorporating the farm classes in entrepreneurial ventures.”
She elaborated by saying, “We incorporate all of the animals and the children get to do hard work. Most of the families come out here to get their children in this environments so that they can learn what it would be like to live on a farm. So, what makes us different is that the children are not learning by just reading about it or observing from afar. They’re literally doing the work themselves and they love it so much.”
Parents pay a quarterly fee for a regular class and then extra for special events individually.
Barefoot Acres Homeschool currently operates one day a week from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will add 3 days per week next year.
