The J. Douglas Williams YMCA in Lake Mary offers fun for all and then some according to Executive Director, Warren Yon.
He expressed how proud he is to work for an organization that “truly gives back to the community” and cited that “the YMCA is committed not only to impact but also to sustainability, but making a difference that lasts.”
Yon stated, “While the Y provides the essentials you’d expect - gym facilities, swimming and group exercise - we go far beyond that. We encourage healthy habits for the entire family. Kids as young as 8 can begin learning to use select equipment under parental supervision and by age 13, they can work out independently.”
The Play Center is open for parents to allow their children to enjoy up to two hours of daily play, arts and crafts, STEM activities and reading while parents focus on their workouts.
“We’re dedicated to developing our young members, too,” Yon also shared. “Our Y Bucks program teaches core YMCA values - honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility - by rewarding campers who demonstrate them throughout the week.”
He also mentioned that through youth sports like basketball, volleyball, and soccer, kids not only compete but also learn teamwork, inclusion, and leadership.
“In 2024, we launched a Teen Program to provide after-school activities for Lake Mary High School students - now serving over 300 teens,” he said. “Since its start, we’ve seen a noticeable drop in antisocial behavior at Greenwood Lakes Park and the Library. Drowning prevention is another cornerstone of our mission. We offer swim lessons for all ages and skill levels - from survival training to team swimming - and our pool serves as a community hub used by the Sheriff’s Office, Fire Services, and SWAT teams for training.”
The organization doesn’t just cater to young families. Seniors can also take advantage of a place for connection, friendship, and community, helping reduce isolation and promote overall well-being.
“Our Livestrong Program is a free 12-week initiative for cancer survivors,” said Yon. “Participants meet twice weekly: once for exercise and once for health and recovery support with experts from Orlando Health, our valued partner.”
Yon also beamed as he spoke of the recognition that this local Y has received.
“I’ve been at the J. Douglas Williams Y for just over three years, and during that time, our focus has been on strengthening our community presence and impact,” he said. “While awards are appreciated, the real reward is the number of lives we’re able to change every day. The J. Douglas Williams Y has faced challenges, particularly in rebuilding after the pandemic. But seeing our team, board, and members come together to create a new legacy - one that reestablishes the Y as a cornerstone of the Lake Mary community - is what makes it all worthwhile.”
In addition, several community events each year where local businesses and partners can engage with the community by tabling or sponsoring activities. Those community partners include Orlando Health, Lake Mary Parks & Recreation, Sheriff’s Office, Seminole County Schools, Cool Today and numerous golf tournament sponsors.
The Y currently offers classes and programs such as gym access, group exercise classes, swim lessons, sports (basketball, volleyball, soccer), pickleball and youth programs such as camp, Parents’ Night Out and Homeschool P.E.
