One of my absolute favorite times of the year is the Christmas season and one thing that I look forward to the most is the holiday sparkle at Cranes Roost Park in Altamonte Springs! Each year the park transforms into a family-friendly wonderland of lighted trees, choreographed fountain shows, train rides, visits with Santa, and nightly displays that draw visitors from across Seminole County and beyond. The city’s signature “Light Up the Holidays” celebration has become a seasonal must-see for families, couples, and visitors looking for a festive night out.
The origins of the tradition reach back further than many realize. Local coverage of Seminole County’s holiday customs traces the Cranes Roost lighting tradition to 1995 — when the park’s holiday displays first began to take shape and community attendance steadily grew. Since then the annual lighting and month-long light displays have become woven into the winter calendar for residents of Altamonte Springs and neighboring communities.
What makes Cranes Roost so memorable is the scale and variety. The park routinely features more than 200,000 lights across more than 100 displays, anchored by a towering 60-foot Christmas tree decked out with thousands of LED bulbs, ornaments, and miles of garland. The displays are turned on nightly at dusk through the holiday season, and the park often hosts a kick-off “Light Up the Holidays” festival with live music, fireworks and family activities. Admission to the park light displays is free, making it an accessible celebration for all.
The impact on the local area goes beyond pretty lights. The festival atmosphere brings thousands of people into Uptown Altamonte, supporting small businesses, food vendors, nearby restaurants, and hotels — a welcome economic boost during the holiday season. Local news coverage has repeatedly shown crowds in the thousands at tree-lighting events, illustrating the park’s role as a regional draw and community gathering place. Families from surrounding counties regularly make the short drive to experience the displays, holiday programming, and evening entertainment.
There’s also a quieter, social value: Cranes Roost offers a place for neighbors to reconnect, for children to experience seasonal magic, and for multi-generational traditions to form. Whether it’s catching a choreographed fountain show, or simply strolling the boardwalk beneath glittering trees, the park creates memories that keep people coming back year after year.
This December, plan a stop at Cranes Roost Park and see why Altamonte Springs is one of the sweetest holiday spots in Central Florida. With its long-running tradition, family-focused programming, and glowing displays, Cranes Roost continues to light up the season — and the hearts of the community — one night at a time.
And guess what? When you leave, just remember..as the saying goes.. all roads lead to Sanford.
