In a heartfelt effort to enhance the lives of Floridians with disabilities,

Representative Rachel Plakon has successfully passed an important amendment to Rep. Fiona McFarland’s Transportation bill (HB 543). This initiative aims to protect drivers with disabilities, inspired by the touching story of her constituent, Sylvia Longmire.

Sylvia reached out to Rep. Plakon after experiencing a distressing incident at Orlando International Airport. While preparing for her travels, she found herself in a difficult situation: there were no available parking spaces that would allow her to safely deploy her wheelchair ramp. Faced with this challenge, Sylvia made the necessary decision to double- park, believing it was her only option. Unfortunately, she was towed, leaving her feeling frustrated and vulnerable.

"When Sylvia shared her story with me, my heart went out to her," Rep. Plakon reflected. "It was a stark reminder of the daily challenges many individuals face when trying to navigate

public spaces. This isn’t just policy; it’s about real lives and ensuring everyone has the access they need."

The newly passed amendment allows vehicles displaying a valid disabled parking permit, equipped with permanently installed mobility access, to occupy more than one parking space when reasonably necessary. This vital change will ensure that individuals like Sylvia can park without fear of being penalized when no appropriate spaces are available.

"Accessibility is not merely a convenience; it’s absolutely necessary for people who rely on wheelchair ramps.” Plakon emphasized.

Rep. Plakon expressed her gratitude to Rep. McFarland for her support in championing this vital issue, highlighting the importance of collaboration in creating meaningful change.

"This amendment stands as a significant step forward for Floridians who rely on wheelchair ramps, and I hope it inspires other states to adopt similar measures.”

The bill still has two committee stops before it hits the floor and passes the House.
