The Oviedo City Council met on February 2, with several topics being discussed and voted on. The five board members of the Oviedo City Council voted unanimously to pass Ordinance No. 1762, an update on the Land Development Code (LDC).

The LDC was last updated on November 18, 2024, with the adoption of Ordinance No. 1752. Calls for an update with Ordinance No. 1762 include four major amendments, including clarification, typographical corrections, updates per new Florida statutes, and map amendments to change the zoning of properties. Map amendments will specifically work to change zoning districts conflicting with future land use designations.

The local planning agency held a public hearing to discuss the adoption of Ordinance No. 1762, with the public suggesting that the adoption be passed. Council member Jeff Boddiford created a motion to approve the adoption of the new ordinance, with council member Keith Britton seconding the motion. After no further discussion between the board, the motion was approved, and Ordinance No. 1762 was placed into effect immediately.

Mayor Megan Sladek commented on the ordinance, saying, “I think we have done a great job talking with everyone and making sure that anybody who’s impacted is comfortable with the outcome.”

The ordinance will include a Land Use Administrator to look over event permits, development permits and building permits to ensure they meet the minimum LDC requirements. Issuance of a site development order will be required for new development, redevelopment, subdivision of land more than three lots, renovation, and any change in use that increases the intensity or substantially modifies the site.

The strategic impact of the ordinance features economic vitality. The ordinance works to foster innovation, create a sustainable economy, and amplify the overall quality of life for Oviedo residents. There is no budget impact in adopting the new ordinance.

Discussion of upcoming events took place at the meeting held by Council member Jeff Boddiford. Upcoming Oviedo events include the Hope Shamrock 5K and St. Patrick’s Day on March 14.

Next meeting dates for the City Council was a regular session on February 16 at 6:30 p.m., a tentative work session on February 23 at 6 p.m., and a regular session on March 2 at 6:30 p.m.
