SANFORD — After a month of wild weather, including a cancellation of the monthly Sine Metu Jameson Irish Whiskey Race on Sunday and another Goslings Rum Race with only three boats able to take to Lake Monroe, the month of July closed out on a high note on Wednesday.
Gen 4, this time with Fisk Hayden at the helm, claimed its third victory of the month, finishing over a minute ahead of the 8-boat field, with runner-up Fleur de Mer III, under Olivier Fleury, and Wicklow Way, piloted by Rich Gailey, rounding out the podium. Gen 4 was also the top finishing Displacement Boat, while Tony Porterfield directed Bad JuJu to first place in Planing Boat and a sixth place overall finish.
Wednesday night had near perfect conditions with no rain and plenty of wind, and a just a few showers well west of Sanford. That was in direct contrast from Sunday, when several vessels had already taken to the lake when a strong storm with heavy winds moved over the area, forcing a cancellation of the event. Amazingly enough, not long after the weather cleared up and it ended up being a nice afternoon.
As mentioned, the win was the third of the month for Gen 4, after Angie Hayden led the craft to a Ladies on the Lake Wednesday Night Series, as well as overall, victory and Steve Hayden was wearing the Captain’s hat during a triumph in the monthly LMSA Members Club Race.
