SANFORD — The City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department and Central Florida Soap Box Derby held its final Rally Derby of the 2024-2025 season _ the February 2-Day Rally _ at the CFSBD Derby Track and facility in Mike Kirby Park on February 21-and-22, 2026.
For the fourth consecutive year, the weekend also saw hand-crafted trophies, special awards and plaques courtesy of the Swinderman family from Ohio, being presented, to the delight of everyone.
A very Special Award went to Roger Soucey, who has been a staple for many years in helping inspect, weigh in and check the starting line alignment for the rallies in Sanford and the CFSBD, as well as using his trailer to haul the cars to Akron for the World finals.
The weekend was an amazing one for changing weather, as it was cold one day, warm and even hot the next day, wind coming from all angles, heavy fog in the mornings and just prior to the lunch break on Sunday, a sudden rain storm that was more like a hurricane, with rain blowing sideways being driven by wet seemed like a 50-plus wind. Luckily it only delayed things about an hour and did not do any damage.
On the track, the winners were _ Katie Scotti and Haley Hoagey with two wins each in Stock; Alicia Swinderman with two wins and Samantha Hoagey and Alexa Mello with one win each in Super Stock; and Mason Webb, Isaac Pickels, Charles Connor and Bryce Sykes with one win each in Masters.
With rally racing coming to an end, the City of Sanford Parks and Recreation Department and Central Florida Soap Box Derby will turn its attention to its two events that will qualify racers for the 88th Annual First Energy All-American Soap Box Derby at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio, Sunday, July 11-through-Saturday, July 18.
First up is the 13th Annual Super Kids Derby, for children with a medically diagnosed disability, this Saturday, March 14, and the 37th All-American Soap Box Derby Local Race on Saturday, May 2, that will decide the three Sanford Champions, at Mike Kirby Park.
Everyone, especially interested non-racers, is invited to attend any of the family friendly events, free of charge, at the beautiful Mike Kirby Park facility located on the west side of Sanford on Oregon Avenue, north off of CR-46A (25th Street/H. E. Thomas Parkway) or east off of Rinehart Road, just south of the GreeneWay entry. The track is East of Bentley Elementary School.
