Heart of Florida United Way Esteemed Leader Passes Baton to New Generation Poised to Elevate Community Impact

Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) is undergoing exciting changes within its Community Impact team. These adjustments will allow HFUW to further its mission of improving lives in Central Florida.  

Ray Larsen, a dedicated leader who has served HFUW for over 15 years, is retiring from his role as Senior Vice President effective August 30, 2024. Larsen’s commitment extends beyond HFUW, encompassing more than 30 years of service to Central Florida's non-profit sector. At HFUW, he has served as a trusted advisor to the President/CEO. Some of his achievements include defining the HFUW Investor Model, leading incredible growth of the 211 and Crisis Services Contact Center, being recognized as a community leader in his approach to disaster response and most recently, helping the organization define the transformational impact of the MacKenzie Scott gift. 

Kelly Astro will assume the role as the new Senior Vice President of Community Impact. She brings over 25 years of experience across the areas of leadership, college access, career preparation, civic engagement and social responsibility and has most recently served as the Children’s Home Society of Florida’s Community Partnership Director serving Evans High School since 2021.  

Dr. JahKiya Bell, has transitioned into the role of Senior Advisor to the President and CEO. Recognized for her many impactful and lasting contributions both internally and externally at HFUW, Dr. Bell has served in various capacities throughout her 26-year tenure with the organization. She began as an intern in 1995 and progressed into the role of Vice President of Strategic Impact in 2019. 

Heath Wells has transitioned into the role of Vice President of Community Impact. Most recently serving as the Director of Community Engagement on the Strategic Impact and Community Engagement team, Heath has given over a decade of leadership to HFUW. 

“Ray’s dedication has been invaluable,” said Jeff Hayward, President & CEO, Heart of Florida United Way. “As we celebrate his new chapter, we also celebrate the incredible team here who will carry on his mission of improving lives in Central Florida.” 

 The Community Impact team leads Heart of Florida United Way's efforts to invest dollars in programs and services (internal and external) that will have the greatest impact in support of ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed).
