PALATKA — The competitive spirit never dies.
Sanford’s Bobby Lundquist has been an athletic legend in Seminole County since he was a youngster competing in the Sanford Biddy Basketball and Florida Little Major Baseball League back in the 1960’s.
Not to mention amazing skills on the golf course.
He continued to excel in all forms of athletic endeavors through high school at Seminole and college at the University of Florida before returning to the county to start a highly successful career in the coaching profession and High School Administration.
Since retiring from the teaching profession as Principal at Oviedo High School he has turned his attention to Senior Golf and his legend in the sport has also continued to grow.
His most recent outing saw him post one of his best performances ever, as he shot a 3-under-par 207, with rounds of 72-68-67, to win the Florida Senior Azalaea Amateur Golf Championship March 13, 14 and 15 at the Palatka Golf Club by a whopping seven shots over the duo of Terry Tyson from Perrysburg, Ohio, and Bev Hargraves from Little Rock, Arkansas, who shot 4-over-par 211.
The number one ranked legends player in the United States, Greg Osborne from Lititz, Pennsylvania, finished a distant 8th at 8-over-par, 218.
“It’s fun to beat the best!” said Lundquist.
The title was the second in a row at the event for Lundquist.
Two other Sanford golfers also competed in the event in other divisions as Chad Ibbotson shot a 5-over-Park 215 (69-76-70) to finish tied for third in the Senior Division and Randy Smathers was 25th in the Super Senior Division, posting a 21-over-Park 231 (76-77-78).
