The No. 20 UCF softball team authored its 33rd win of the spring last Wednesday at the UCF Softball Complex behind timely two-out hitting and a strong performance in the circle by senior Lena Elkins, taking their midweek matchup against Stetson by a 5-3 final score to improve to 5-0 against in-state opponents this year.
Elkins tossed a season high six innings of three run ball in the winning effort, marking her second-longest appearance in a Knights uniform, and the Black and Gold bolstered their starter offensively with run-scoring hits by Aubrey Evans (2-run single), Kendall Yarnell (RBI double) and Samantha Rey (run-scoring triple), all coming with two outs.
UCF’s Wednesday triumph represented the team’s third straight dating back to its series win over then-No. 23 Arizona State, and lifted the team to 9-1-1 in its last 11 games since its 3-2 walk-off win over FGCU March 25 and 33-11-1 overall this season.

UCF BASEBALL
The No. 21 UCF baseball team entered a weekend series with longtime rival Cincinnati in a tie for second place in the Big 12 standings with a 20-13 overall record and a 10-5 league mark.
The Knights were looking to return to their winning ways after dropping four straight contests. The Black and Gold first fell in a trio of tightly contested games at Kansas last weekend — 4-3 (11 inn.), 6-3 and 3-1 — before dropping a 5-4 extra-inning battle to in-state foe Jacksonville last Tuesday.
Against the Dolphins, UCF built an early 3-1 lead but back answered JU with a run in the fourth and another in the eighth to tie it and force extra innings. JU then scored a go-ahead run in the top of the 10th and the Knights immediately answered thanks to a clutch two-out RBI single from Cayden Gaskin to force an 11th frame. The Dolphins then picked up a two-out RBI single from Roger Vergara that just snuck through the middle of the infield.
Gaskin led the Knights offensively in the game by going 2-for-6 with two runs batted in, while Javier Crespo went 2-for-4 with a walk. Andrew Williamson was also on base four times after tying a UCF season-high with four walks. The Black and Gold also had a solid start from right-hander Roman Kimball in his first start in a Black and Gold uniform by tying a career-long with 4.0 innings pitched.
In the KU series, senior outfielder DeAmez Ross led UCF in the weekend by hitting .385 with two doubles, one triple, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. The catcher Zak Skinner was next by batting .364 with an RBI, while Gaskin followed with a .286 clip and an RBI. Sophomore Mateo Gray led the Black and Gold’s starting rotation by allowing just three earned runs on seven hits while striking out five over 5.2 innings. The bullpen was also strong for the Knights, as seven of the eight relievers that saw action in the series tossed scoreless outings in Kimball, Matthew Heyl, Evan Jones, Kaniel Rosado, Kris Sosnowski, Kevin Schoneboom and Anthony Lariz.
On Deck:
Following this weekend’s series, the Knights were in Daytona Beach to face Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday, April 21 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. UCF will then head to the Beehive State for its inaugural series in Salt Lake City against the University of Utah.
