In a Daughters of the American Revolution meeting at Friday’s Sallie

Harrison Chapter luncheon, a dedicated community member was ceremoniously honored with a prestigious Community Service Award, celebrating her exceptional commitment to improving life in Sanford. The award recognizes individuals who have gone above and beyond to support local initiatives, volunteer their time, and inspire positive change throughout the city. The Florida State Regent, Mrs. Kim Zeman was present and participated in making the presentation along with Chapter Regent Mrs. Dawn Garand. The

award was the culminating effort of the First Vice Regent Ms. Michelle Wilder who also serves as the chapter’s Community Service Award Chairperson.

Virginia Poe, the recipient, whose tireless efforts have benefited numerous residents, was praised by city officials and Mayor Woodruff through letters to the Sallie Harrison Regent, Mrs. Dawn Garand. “Her leadership and advocacy for the arts in Sanford have enriched our city in countless ways. As Chair of the Public Art Commission (PAC), she has guided initiatives ranging from the Art in Chambers exhibit to public sculptures, murals, and utility box art installations,

” Mayor Woodruff explained. He further elaborated, “Most recently, Ms. Poe served on the committee for the Historic Goldsboro Recognition Quilt, further

demonstrating her commitment to honoring Sanford’s cultural heritage. Her dedication, passion and personal investment in the arts inspire all who encounter her work. Ms. Poe’s efforts remind us that public art is not only about beauty, it’s about connection, community, and the enrichment of everyday life. ”

Nearly fifty members and guests who attended the meeting and were joyful in applauding the winner and fellow sister’s achievements, expressing gratitude for her unwavering spirit in volunteer service to Sanford, the city where the chapter was first organized in 1918. The Community Service Award serves as a beacon of inspiration, encouraging others to engage in acts of kindness and civic responsibility. Ms. Poe was humbled and grateful to receive the award.
