Florida State Regent Attends Local Meeting to Welcome New Members and Present Award to Sanford’s Outstanding Community Volunteer
The Sallie Harrison Chapter, Seminole County’s chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, convened its monthly meeting on Friday, April 10th, bringing together members, new members and prospective members to hear further about ongoing projects and future initiatives. The gathering, held at the Heathrow Country Club, was marked by lively conversation and a clear commitment to advancing the group’s mission of historic
preservation, patriotism and education.
During the meeting, chapter Regent Dawn Garand provided an update on recent outreach efforts including future attendance of Honor Flights at Orlando-Sanford’s International airport on April 15 and 25, participation in Sanford’s Memorial Day celebration and highlighted the success of the ongoing community outreach efforts and sales of Celebrating America’s 250 yard signs that is supporting purchases of American Revolution books that the chapter is
donating to Seminole County schools. Committee chairman reports included the awarding of JRotc medals to local Seminole County school recipients, as well as supporting Kids in Support of Soldiers (K.I.S.S.), Junior Membership and Service to America Volunteer Hours. Most importantly, attendees were able to meet and welcome the Florida State Regent Mrs. Kim Zeman who was the meeting’s featured program speaker.
The meeting’s additional highlights occurred during new business when Sanford’s Ms. Virginia Wharton Poe was presented a state DAR certificate and pin as an award for Outstanding Community Service Volunteer Award as well as a lovely crystal heart with an engraved message honoring Ms. Poe. With the presence of Florida State Regent Kim Zeman, the moment was captured in picture and a ceremonious honored presentation.
This moment was preceded by another honorary occurrence with the Oath of Membership being given by the State Regent Zeman to eight new members of Sallie Harrison. Joining in membership were Maureen Collins, Teresa Delk, Leigh DeBord, Beatrice Gestrich, Karen Ibison, Andrea Josiah, Stephanie Oyler, and Ellen Tuech. The chapter’s next meeting was held on May 9, at the Community Alliance Church in Winter Springs when six additional members were inducted, member anniversaries are celebrated, Chapter Achievement certificates are presented and memorial remembrances are given on behalf
of those members whose lives were lost in the last year.
