UCF BASEBALL

Mateo Gray, Max Murray and Anthony Lariz combined to shut Baylor out en route to leading UCF baseball to an 8-0 victory in the series opener on Friday night at Magnolia Field at Baylor Ballpark.

The trio of right-handers allowed just five hits over nine scoreless frames on the night. Gray, Murray and Lariz combined to strike out eight batters. Freshman Murray led the way with five punchouts over 2.1 innings of work.

UCF improved to 28-18 overall and 16-9 in Big 12 play to move into a tie for third place in the league standings. The 16 conference wins mark a new high for the Black and Gold since joining the Big 12 prior to the 2024 campaign. Baylor dropped to 25-24 overall and 11-14 in league play with the setback.

UCF jumped out to an early lead with a trio of runs in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Javier Crespo and Landon Moran started the early rally with back-to-back one-out singles. Following the second out, freshman shortstop Jordan Lodise blasted out a three-run big fly to left-center. The home run marked Lodise’s second of the season and traveled 400 feet.

UCF starter Gray went 4.1 innings and allowed just four hits while striking out one. Murray then earned the win to move to 4-2 on the year after surrendering just one hit while fanning five over 2.1 innings. Lariz then completed the combined shutout by tossing 2.1 perfect innings of relief with a pair of strikeouts. The reigning Big 12 Pitcher of the Week Lucas Davenport took the loss for Baylor after allowing seven runs to drop to 5-3 on the year.

Seven Knights recorded hits on the evening with Crespo and Moran leading the way with three hits apiece. With the second-inning home run, Lodise drove in a game-high three runs, while DeAmez Ross and John Smith III also drove in multiple runs with two apiece. Brytton Clements paced BU by going 2-for-4.

The shutout marked UCF’s sixth of the season and third in conference play.

Coming off a 1-2 Big 12 series against No. 19 Arizona State last weekend, the Knights jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but Florida Atlantic responded by scoring six of the next seven runs to pull out a 6-5 in-state midweek contest on Tuesday night at FAU Baseball Stadium.

UCF loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the second and scored four runs. Following back-to-back walks by Crespo and Moran, along with a single from Ross, freshman catcher Dallas Brooks drove in his second and third runs of the season with a two-run single through the right side of the infield. After a bunt from Lodise moved Ross to third base, Austin Jacobs dropped down a safety squeeze to bring him home to make it 3-0. Andrew Williamson then capped the scoring in the frame with a sharp RBI single up the middle.

The Owls struck back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning to deadlock the score at 4-4. Patrick Ward had the big hit in the frame with a two-run home run to left field.

Zak Skinner led off the third by getting hit by a pitch. He later advanced to second base on a wild pitch and came in to score on a hard-hit RBI double to the gap in left-center off the bat of Crespo to give the Knights a 5-4 advantage.

FAU rallied in the last of the sixth. The Owls got a pair of runners aboard with one away in the inning and Marshall Lipsey delivered a bloop RBI single to center field to tie it up. Florida Atlantic then took the lead on a sacrifice fly from Michael Perazza.

Ross led the Knights offensively by going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Brooks went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in. Crespo too had a nice day by going 1-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run scored. Ward paced FAU with a 2-for-4 night with a home run and two RBI.

UCF has won seven of its last 10 ballgames.
