Some people coach for the wins. Others coach for something far deeper.
For nearly 30 years, David Rivera has been pouring into the lives of young athletes throughout Seminole County, not simply teaching them how to play softball, but teaching them how to believe in themselves. And honestly, in a world where people are quick to count wins and losses, there is something refreshing about a coach who measures success by impact instead of trophies.
Born in New York and raised in the Puerto Rico projects, Rivera knows firsthand what it feels like to grow up surrounded by struggle, violence, instability, and the absence of a father figure. Sports became more than a pastime for him. Sports became a possibility.
He recalls one coach in particular who changed the trajectory of his life. A coach who gave him rides to practice, took time to invest in him, and once even bought a Mother’s Day gift for him to give to his mother. Small gestures to some. Life changing to a young boy who simply needed someone to see him.
And he never forgot it. So when his oldest son turned six years old, Rivera started coaching at Sanford Little League. The rest, as he puts it, is history.
Today, Rivera is the founder of Fusion Athletics Inc., a nonprofit softball organization dedicated to helping young athletes pursue college scholarships while continuing to play the sport they love. But if you ask him what matters most, it is not the championships. It is the transformation.
“The kids remember the way they were treated and encouraged more than the wins and losses,” Rivera shared.
Whew. That one stayed with me. Because isn’t that true in life too? Long after titles fade and scoreboards reset, people remember how you made them feel. They remember who showed up. Who believed in them. Who planted seeds of hope when they could not yet see their own future clearly.
Rivera says every season reminds him why this work matters. Especially when he sees young athletes begin to understand that college, opportunity, and success may actually be possible for them too.
And perhaps that is what makes coaches, mentors, and fathers so important in our communities. Their presence has the power to interrupt cycles. To redirect futures. To create stability where there once was uncertainty.
Rivera credits his own family for supporting him through years of long hours, missed time, and sacrifice. He knows this work could not happen alone.
As we celebrate Father’s Day this month, perhaps we should also celebrate the men who choose to show up consistently for young people whether on the field, in the classroom, or simply through encouragement and example.
Because sometimes the greatest impact is not found in the spotlight. Sometimes it is found in a coach quietly reminding a child that their story can still become something beautiful. And according to Rivera, that opportunity belongs to all of us.
“Do not miss any opportunity, good or bad, that life places in front of you to make a positive impact in someone’s life.” - David Rivera
This summer, Fusion Softball Organization will continue its mission of creating opportunities for young athletes through its upcoming Summer College Showcase, taking place June 26 through June 28, 2026, at the Polk State College Complex. The showcase will provide athletes with valuable exposure opportunities as they pursue both collegiate athletics and higher education.
Organizations like Fusion Athletics are about far more than sports. They are about mentorship, discipline, encouragement, and creating opportunities that can change the trajectory of a young person’s future.
Fusion Athletics continues to welcome volunteers, sponsors, equipment donations, and community support to help provide opportunities for athletes who may not otherwise have access to them. Whether through sponsorships, financial support, donated equipment, or simply spreading the word, every contribution helps invest in the future of these young athletes.
