ORLANDO — Sean Sweeney has been named head coach of the Orlando Magic, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced. He becomes the 16th head coach in franchise history.
“We’re excited to welcome Sean (Sweeney) to the Orlando Magic family,” said Weltman. “Sean brings a tremendous work ethic and a high degree of intensity that set the tone for everything he does. Sean’s attention to detail and his ability to communicate and teach the game clearly stands out. He’s grounded in competitiveness and accountability, while also embracing a modern, creative approach to coaching.”
Sweeney joins the Magic after serving as associate head coach for the Western Conference Champion and NBA Runners-Up San Antonio Spurs this past season. Before the 2025-26 campaign, he was an assistant coach with the Dallas Mavericks for four seasons (2021-25).
Prior to his tenure in Dallas, Sweeney spent three seasons as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons from 2018-21, following a four-year stint with the Milwaukee Bucks in the same role from 2014-18.
Sweeney began his NBA career with the Brooklyn Nets in 2011, starting as a video coordinator before transitioning to an assistant coaching position for the 2013-14 season.
Sweeney’s early career included collegiate stops as video coordinator for the University of Northern Iowa, director of basketball operations at the University of Evansville and assistant coaching stints at Anoka-Ramsey Community College and the Academy of Art University.
A native of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Sweeney played one season at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay before transferring to the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul), where he was a three-year starter and earned all-conference honors as a senior in 2005-06.
2026 HOME PRESEASON SCHEDULE RELEASED
The Orlando Magic will host two games at Kia Center during the 2026 preseason –Tuesday, October 13 vs. Cleveland and Friday, October 16 vs. Miami. Both home preseason games start at 7 p.m.
