Local author Heather Tabers has been awarded the Bronze Selah Award for Historical Romance for her novel, “Their Burden to Bear,” a story set in Washington, D.C., during the aftermath of World War I.
Presented annually by the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference, the Selah Awards recognize excellence in Christian publishing across multiple genres. Tabers received the Bronze award in the Historical Romance category during the 2026 conference.
Their Burden to Bear follows Elsie St. Clair, a determined young woman caught in a web of blackmail and family secrets, and Phillip Pierce, a former U.S. Marine body bearer tasked with escorting America's Unknown Soldier to Arlington National Cemetery. Set against the backdrop of the 1921 dedication of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the novel blends romance, faith, and lesser-known moments of American history.
"I've always believed stories have the power to connect readers with both history and hope," said Tabers. "It's an honor to see this book recognized by the Selah Awards, and I'm grateful for the readers who have embraced these characters and their journey."
Known for her immersive storytelling style, Tabers incorporates historical photographs, maps, recipes, playlists, book club kits, and other period-inspired extras into her work, allowing readers to step more fully into the world of her novels. Her goal is not only to tell a compelling story but also to help readers experience history in a meaningful and memorable way.
In addition to writing historical romance, Tabers is the author of the children's chapter book series Framing Your World and serves fellow authors through book formatting, publishing support, and coaching. She holds a bachelor's degree in Communications and a master's degree in English Composition.
A resident of the Sanford area, Tabers is passionate about uncovering overlooked stories from America's past and bringing them to life through faith-filled fiction.
