SANFORD — Despite challenging weather conditions, the Lake Monroe Sailing Association were able to get in two exciting days of action.
On Saturday, July 11, the Club got in a full day of three races in the July edition of the LMSA Club Championship Series for the Hayden Cup. It was the first time in quite awhile that all three scheduled racers were completed.
Under very windy conditions, including a 180-degree direction shift during the final race, Old Yeller, under the guidance of Max Perez, had a dominating afternoon, winning two races outright and tying Show Me, piloted by Andy Forrest, for the victory in the opening race.
Old Yeller accumulated a total of 3.5 points to outdistance Show Me, with 7.5 points, and The Royal Scam, captained by Steve Siegfried, which completed the podium with 10.0 points.
All in all, it was a very exciting and exhausting day on the water, but it provided was so much fun for the fans and competitors.
Four nights later, on July 15, 10 boats took to the water for the weekly Wednesday Night Breezeway Rum Race and it was Rich Gailey directing Wicklow Way to a wet finish by a lager than normal difference of 2-minutes-and-36 seconds over Black Jack Bill and Bill Holstein and 2:43 over Sheet Show and Ray Laguna.
Most of the race was run under mostly clear skies, but a late afternoon shower moved in from the south between the competitors and the finish line, forcing the vessels to finish under a light to medium rain. At least there was no lightning.
