Get Sanford Cycling, in partnership with UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County 4-H and Bicikleta Bike Shop, hosted a three-day bicycle workshop from July 22 to 24, 2024 at The Historic Hopper Academy in Sanford. The workshop aimed to inspire and educate middle school students about the joys of cycling and the importance of bike safety. This educational program was coordinated in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), the Sanford Police Department, the City of Sanford Welcome Center, and the Seminole County Greenways and Natural Lands Division. Get Sanford Cycling is Bicikleta Bike Shop’s 501(c)3 with a mission to empower children to lead healthy, active, and goal-driven lives through cycling.
Eight middle school-aged participants received hands-on training and information about protective gear, bicycle types and maintenance, safe riding, and healthy snacks. FDOT provided a comprehensive helmet fitting session and the Sanford Police Department led a guided ride around downtown Sanford, emphasizing safe riding practices and stopping at the City of Sanford’s Welcome Center for refreshments. Visitors from Seminole County Greenways and Natural Lands educated students about nearby greenways and trails. The collaboration among local organizations and agencies underscored the shared commitment to promoting safety, health, and environmental awareness through cycling.
The UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County 4-H Youth Development Program encourages youth ages 5 to 18 to explore their “sparks” through fun, hands-on learning experiences guided by 4-H volunteers in interest areas such as public speaking, food and nutrition, agricultural science, gardening, leadership, and more.
