LITTLE LEAGUE HOME RUN DERBY
Prior to helping Lake Mary advance to the United States Championship Game at the 2024 Little League Baseball World Series with a 6-3 victory over a team from Henderson, Nevada, on Thursday, 12-year-old Landon Bono proved to be the best in the T-Mobile Little League Home Run Derby, outlasting a field of 8 contenders.
As the only 11-year-old in the field a year ago, Bono finished a homer short of making the finals and had to settle for third place.
The only left-handed hitter in the field was not about to let the happen again this year _ hitting a group high 13 home runs in 90-seconds in the first round; winning a semifinal, 11-10, with 15-seconds still remaining on the clock; then batting first and launching 20 home runs in 2-minutes in the Championship Round, while his opponent could only country with 14.
Landon’s cousin, 11-year-old Addison Bono, did well in the Softball Home Run Derby, blasting 10 home runs, but failing to advance to the semifinals.
CREWS SET TO JOIN NATIONALS
The Seminole County/Washington Nationals connection is expected to add another chapter on Monday as Lake Mary High School and Sanford River Rats product Dylan Crews, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of LSU, is expected to be called up to Washington on Monday and play centerfield for Manager Davy Martinez, the Lake Howell High School graduate, and the Nationals against the New York Yankees.
Playing in his first full pro season in 2024, Crews slashed .272/.343/.446 with 21 doubles, six triples, 13 home runs, 60 runs and 68 RBI with Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester. He’s also swiped 25 bases and drawn 35 walks in 99 games.
Crews has been hot at the plate this month, slugging .542 with four homers and 14 RBI in August.
Crews would be the latest player/coach with Seminole County ties following Seminole High School Hall of Fame Tim Raines (when the club was the Montreal Expos), Former Sanford River Rats Manager Davy Johnson, Seminole High’s Rick Eckstein (Hitting Coach) and Martinez.
