UCF MEN’S SOCCER

The No. 19 UCF men’s soccer team got a goal from redshirt freshman forward Drew Hansen as the Knights pulled out a 1-1 draw with the No. 23 Seattle Redhawks at the UCF Soccer Complex Sunday evening.

As the clock ticked down past 30 seconds to play in the first half, newcoming midfielder Javier López Sánchez booted a pass deep into the Redhawks’ defensive end from just inside midfield. Fifth year defender Anderson Rosa approached the corner and timed his touch on the other end, sending a strong pass to the middle of the box with his left foot, which Hansen ripping a right-footed strike perfectly to send the ball past the Seattle goalkeeper and inside the left post with just 14 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Seattle would tie the affairs at one in the 65th minute off a bad giveaway by the Knights, but junior goalkeeper Juanvi Muñoz preserved the tie with a critical save on a Seattle penalty kick chance in the 79th minute.

UCF remained unbeaten for the fourth time in five matches against ranked opponents since the start of the 2023 season. The Black and Gold kicked off the ‘23 campaign with a gritty 2-1 road victory over then-No. 9 Clemson Aug. 24, and since then have earned hard-fought draws with then-No. 4 West Virginia, then-No. 11 FIU and No. 23 Seattle.

   Up Next:

The Knights get another chance at toppling a ranked opponent in their next match, when the squad will welcome the No. 15 Wake Forest Demon Deacons to Orlando on Saturday. Kickoff for the match is slated for 7 p.m. from the UCF Soccer Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+.

ORLANDO CITY

Orlando City SC (9-10-7, 34 points) dropped a 3-0 decision on the road against Sporting Kansas City (7-14-6, 27 points) on Saturday night at Children’s Mercy Park. The match was the regular season return for both sides, with Orlando City having last played a league match on July 20 before the Leagues Cup 2024 break.

   Scoring Summary:

   * 44’ - Jake Davis (Stephen Afrifa) – SKC 1, ORL 0 _ The hosts took the lead shortly before the end of the first half when Jake Davis took the ball from a downed teammate at the top of the Orlando box and dribbled into the center of the Lions’ defense. He then sent a shot across the face of goalkeeper Pedro Gallese and into the far-right corner of the net.

   * 52’ - Dániel Sallói (Erik Thommy, Jake Davis) – SKC 2, ORL 0 _ Shortly after the start of the second half and a dangerous ball in the Sporting box for the Lions, SKC went on the break on a transition to take it all the way down the field to the Lions’ end. Erik Thommy received the ball for SKC at the top of the Orlando box and fed it to the left to a wide-open Dániel Sallói who buried it near post.

   * 90+2’ - Remi Walter (Alan Pulido, Johnny Russell) – SKC 3, ORL 0 _ The home side put things away in the second minute of stoppage time, off a throw-in deep in the Lions’ zone. Johnny Russell collected the throw before flicking the ball to Alan Pulido running down the right side. Pulido pulled a cross back on a sharp angle to the top of the box, finding Remi Walter who struck a left-footed shot from distance into the back of the net.

   Next Match:

The Lions will host Nashville SC on Saturday at Inter&Co Stadium. That match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

UCF WOMEN’S SOCCER

Senior Chloe Netzel recorded her second brace of the young season en route to leading UCF to a 2-2 draw against Florida on Sunday night at Donald R. Dizney Stadium. With the result, the Knights remain unbeaten on the season as well as in their last five matches against the Gators.

With the Black and Gold (1-0-2) putting the pressure on in the early stages, Emily Thompson fed a pass ahead to Netzel on the left side and Netzel continued her stellar start to the season with a left-footed strike to the far side of the goal. The goal came in the 17th minute and gave UCF an early 1-0 advantage.

Later tied at 1-1 in the second half, Netzel again fired in a strike from the left side of box to the far side of goal for her second brace of her career and the season to give the Knights a 2-1 lead in the 60th minute. Mia Asenjo was credited with an assist on the play as she fed Netzel for the Preseason All-Big 12 honoree’s fifth goal of the season.

The Gators (1-0-2) again countered back 10 minutes later, however, as Sophie White managed to get open in the box for the equalizer in the 70th minute.

The Knights got a couple of more solid looks from Netzel down the stretch along with a couple of questionable offside calls, as the contest would go on to end in the 2-all draw.

With the draw, UCF is now 4-0-1 over UF in the last five meetings between the in-state foes. The Knights have also outscored the Gators by an impressive tally of 12-2 during the stretch.

The Black and Gold will now return home to face No. 16 Georgia for Senior Knight on Sunday at 6 p.m. at the UCF Soccer Complex.

ORLANDO PRIDE

The Orlando Pride (12-0-5, 41 points) defeated the host Houston Dash (3-9-5, 14 points) 1-0 on Friday night at Shell Energy Stadium, setting multiple NWSL and Club records en route to the team’s 17th straight result of the season. Summer Yates scored the difference maker, her fifth goal of the season and third game-winning goal of the year.

With the victory, the Pride’s current unbeaten run extends to 18 matches dating back to the final game of the 2023 season, also a 1-0 win against Houston, and sets the record for longest unbeaten streak in league history.

The win also marked the 12th win of the season for the Pride, a single-season high, passing the team’s 11 wins from the 2017 season. Orlando now sits at 41 points on the year, the most the team has ever accumulated in a season.

   Scoring Summary:

   * 67’ - Summer Yates (Angelina) – ORL 1, HOU 0 _ The Pride finally found the breakthrough in the second half after Angelina collected the ball in the midfield and sent a ball in over the Houston backline. Summer Yates was able to get on the end of the pass and calmly slot the ball past the Dash goalkeeper.

   Next Match:

The Pride return to Inter&Co Stadium for a clash against NJ/NY Gotham FC on Sunday. The match is set to kick off at 6 p.m. and can be seen nationally on NWSL+ and locally on Bally Sports Sun.
