Mother Nature was the big winner on Friday, as stormy weather either delayed or suspended/cancelled nearly every game as the Sunshine State Athletic Association (SSAA) schools played their second week of the season and the FHSAA schools attempted to play Week 1 of the regular season.
The one game that was not affected by the weather was powerful Lake Mary High School, which traveled to Ft. Lauderdale to take on State Ranked Cardinal Gibbons at Dr. Bud Tight Field and eased to a 49-20 victory in the Broward County Showcase.
While the Rams’ passing attack gets most of the publicity because of the big arm of Notre Dame commit junior Noah Grubbs, it was the strong running attack, which doesn’t get the recognition it deserves, that powered Coach Scott Perry’s charges to the victory.
Grubbs was his usual self, completing 11-of-16 passes for 162-yards and two touchdowns against one interception, but it was senior running back Isaiah Thomas that stole the show, carrying the ball 19 times for 149-yards and a touchdown, while also catching three passes for 40-yards and another score to earn Game MVP honors.
Fellow running backs Gavin Isaacs, a junior, and senior Jaysen Soto, scored a pair of touchdowns each, Isaacs carrying the ball eight times for 75 yards and Soto hauling the leather five times for 54 yards.
Five receivers, including Thomas, caught passes, led by junior Terrance Dixon with two catches for 44 yards and a touchdown.
Senior placekicker Emilio Bacardi was perfect, converting all seven of his PAT (Point After Touchdown) attempts.
Hagerty High School also won on opening night, as the school celebrated its 20th season of football with a 31-14 victory over Lake Howell at Sam Momery Stadium.
Senior quarterback Caden Mitchell was 11-for-15 passing for 151-yards and a touchdown, and also carried the ball five times for 26-yards and a touchdown for the Huskies, who ran for 319-yards.
Senior Porter Williams carried the ball 12 ties for 161 yards and two touchdowns and senior Jalon Lewis had nine carries for 132 yards.
Senior Bryson Bock caught three passes for 52 yards and a touchdown.
In a wild game at John Courier Field, Bishop Moore outscored host Oviedo, 45-40, in a game that featured lightning delays, 1,108 yards of offense and several lead changes.
For the Lions, senior quarterback Jerome Curry was 7-for-12 for 252 yards with three touchdowns and an interception, while sophomore signal-caller Sebastian Galeano was 6-for-8 for 100 yards and a touchdown, while senior Chance Nixon carried the ball 16 times for 107 yards and caught three passes for 115-yards and two touchdowns, sophomore receiver Jordan Donahoo caught three passes for 77yards and two touchdowns and junior running back Brock Joyce carried the ball 18 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.
The Lyman at Lake Brantley game was suspended to Saturday morning and it was the Greyhounds rolling to a 27-0 shutout, behind junior quarterback Breylon Sanchez, who was 16-for-30 for 230-yards, four touchdowns and an interception.
Senior Ronald Mike caught four passes for 109-yards and a touchdown, senior Sev Croom II caught four passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns and senior C. Lawson Rawls caught two passes for 18 yards and a touchdown, while the Lyman defense had 11 tackles for loss, a blocked punt and three fumble recoveries while holding the Patriots to 51 yards of total offense.
In SSAA action, The Master’s Academy and The Geneva School both improved to 2-0 on the season, the defending state champion Eagles rolling, 62-14, over Bradenton-St. Stephen’s Episcopal and the Knights blanking Kissimmee-City of Life Christian Academy, 36-0.
Lake Mary Prep (1-1) had yo wait until Monday to take down Melbourne-Calvary Chapel Academy (1-1), 46-8, and Orangewood Christian dropped a 37-23 decision to Vero Beach-St. Edward’s ob Friday.
One big disappointment from Friday was Robinson High School from Tampa making the decision to not travel to Sanford to take on Seminole High School and also deciding not to make up the game at a later date.
