UCF MEN’S SOCCER

Riding back-to-back one-goal showings entering Friday evening’s action, the No. 17 UCF men’s soccer team was primed for an explosion.

It certainly came, giving shades of the spectacle that frequents the Cape Canaveral launch pads some 45 miles due east of the UCF Soccer Complex.

Fittingly donning their Canaveral blue SpaceU kits in accompaniment of the squad’s first of two space games of the season, the offense erupted for a season high five goals, highlighted by freshman Carlos Rojas’ first collegiate brace, in the team’s 5-1 win over the UC Irvine Anteaters (1-2-1) Friday evening.

The Knights (2-0-2), rebranded as the Citronauts for the evening, were relentless on the offensive end of the pitch throughout the evening, producing not only a new season-best five scores, but single-game season highs in total shot attempts (20), shots on goal (13) and corner kicks (8) as well.

The fireworks began early, with senior forward Emmanuel Bam igniting his team’s offense in just the fifth minute of action. After Irvine tied the contest in the 34th minute and sending the game to half tied at 1-1, sophomore midfielder Yanis Belatrache took his turn, potting his first career game-winning goal just after the commencement of the second half. UCF’s offensive insurance came on the back of a hustle play by newcoming midfielder Javier López Sánchez, who outran three UC Irvine defenders to create a breakaway chance in the 73rd minute.

With his team firmly in command, the 6-foot-5 Rojas added an emphatic exclamation point. Appearing in the first match of his collegiate career, the Orlando native scored his first two collegiate goals just 78 seconds apart, the first coming on a well-executed header off a free kick by fifth year Anderson Rosa, and the second with aid from Awoudor that followed a misplay by the Anteater goalkeeper.

The Citronauts’ offensive efforts were more than enough for redshirt-freshman goalkeeper Shane Wright (Trinity Prep), making his second straight collegiate start in the stead of injured starter Juanvi Muñoz.

Wright represented the steady presence his team was looking for throughout the contest, making a personal game-high three saves beginning with his thwarting of an Anteaters chance just 69 seconds in.

  Up Next:

The Knights will now face their first test away from home against the FIU Panthers in Miami tonight (Wednesday). Kickoff for the match is slated for 7 p.m. from FIU Soccer Stadium and will be streamed on ESPN+.

UCF volleyball (4-0) earned a 3-0 (25-20, 25-21 and 25-22) sweep against UNC-Wilmington (2-3) Saturday evening at Insight Credit Union Arena in the Edmunds Center at Stetson.

Avah Armour tallied a match-high 14 kills. Abby Schomers ran the offense with 39 assists.

Armour, Schomers and Chloe Scheer each were tabbed to the All-Tournament Team.

Host Stetson (3-2) had also swept UNCW Friday night, 3-0 (25-19), 25-17 and 25-23), in a match where the Hatters never trailed.

Jenna Simmons led the team in kills with 13 followed by Leilani Vitale with 11 and Annabelle Standish with 10. Nyah Molina tallied 39 assists to go along with 4 kills and 8 digs. Defensively, Haruka Sugimoto totaled a team high 23 digs followed by Simmons with 15 and Standish with 11. Ayala Halfon was the team leader in total blocks with four.

Stetson will now travel up to South Carolina for matches against host South Carolina on Friday at 1 p.m. On Saturday, the Hatters will take on FIU and Wake Forest at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
