Weathering the weather

Weathering the weather
Photos courtesy of Seminole High School Athletics _ Khamani Robinson (No. 8, above) scored three touchdowns on just five carries and the Seminole defense was in the Lyman backfield all night _ allowing just 26 yards rushing and getting 12 quarterback sacks _ as Seminole went on the road and handed the Greyhounds a 43-13 setback.

Friday night turned out to be another interesting one for Seminole County High School Football Programs as another round of stormy wet weather moved across the area and affecting nearly all 10 games involving local teams, including a pair of contests that were called off early because of delays and the lateness of the evening.

The highlights of the week were Seminole (2-0) and The Master’s Academy (4-0) remaining the only undefeated teams left in the county; The Tribe and Oviedo (2-1) comping to big victories over Seminole Athletic Conference foes; and Lake Mary (2-1) coming within inches of pulling off a big victory over powerful Lakeland (3-0).

Here are some recaps and box scores, plus the 3/4 Week scores and the Week 4/5 schedules:

Seminole 43, Lyman 13

The Fighting Seminoles put together their best all-around game of the season in easing past SAC rival Lyman (1-2), 43-13, at Carlton D. Henley Sports Complex in a game that was ended with 58-seconds remaining in the third quarter with more inclement weather on the way.

The game was a defensive battle early, with the Tribe, ranked No. 3 in MaxPrep’s Class 7A State Poll, leading 13-0 _ on a 4-yard run by Khamani Robinson in the first quarter and a 50-yard blocked punt return by Kaeden Reyes early in the second period _ when the first in-game delay came with 7:42 remaining in the second period.

After a 93-minute delay, the Noles came out of the locker room on fire, scoring 17 more points before intermission to build a 30-7 lead at the break.

Another delay at the start of the third quarter because the lights went out, didn’t slow Seminole as it outscored the Greyhounds, 13-6, to take a 43-13 lead.

Finally at 10:50 p.m. and more inclement weather on the way, the game was called with 58-seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Offensively, Robinson carried the ball just five times for 86-yards, but the senior was able to find the end zone on three of those carries, while quarterback Michael Clayton was 12-for-28 passing for 212-yards and an interception and touchdown passes of 50- and 13-yards to Xavier Tucker and Anthony Gay, respectively.

Placekicker Liam Allen had another big game also, nailing a 37-yard field goal and all four of PAT tries.

In addition to his touchdown return, Reyes also had an interception to along with four tackles, one for loss.

Juan Berchal also had an 48-yard interception return to set up a score as the defense held Lyman to just 26-yards on 11 rushing attempts, while accumulating 12 quarterback sacks _ four from Javon Peterson _ and 11 other quarterback hurries.

Despite the pressure, Greyhounds quarterback Breylon Sanchez still had a decent night, completing 13-of-29 passes for 214-yards and two interceptions to go along with touchdown passes to Ronald Mike (58-yards) and Kelsie Holmes (55-yards).

Jalon Lewis got the guests on the board with a 43-yard gallop and moments later Porter Williams made its 14-0 with a 39-yard run.

Reynolds Stadium.

The game was delayed twice in the first half, by lightning in the first quarter and when the lights went out just before half, and it was 14-14 at intermission.

Both teams scored late in the third quarter as the game went to the fourth tied at 21-21, but the host Rams regained the lead when Noah Grubbs hit Carson Friedman with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 11:57 left in the game and the hosts made the lead stand up until the final seconds when the nine-time state champion Dreadnaughts got an 80-yard touchdown throw from Zander Smith (13-for-22, 232 yards) to Shanard Clower (8-receptions, 219-yards) for the second time in the second half to tie the game at 27-27 at the end of regulation.
