The Florida Historical Society

The society has been in existence since 1856. It publishes the journal Florida Historical Quarterly, originally the Florida Historical Society Quarterly, an academic journal which releases new volumes four times a year, and manages the Library of Florida History.

Where is it located? Why in the former U S Post Office building in Cocoa, Florida, of course. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Various books about different aspects of Florida history are also available for purchase.

Some recent titles include:

A revised addition of Jonathan Dickinson's Journal

A novel: Florida Boy

A collection of articles and sayings of Stetson Kennedy, the author of Palmetto Country

Spanish Seminole, about the west coast Spanish speaking fishermen who loosely allied with the Seminoles in their struggle to remain in Florida.

Before His Time: The Untold Story of Harry T. Moore, America's First Civil Rights Martyr.

There are many more.

All the newcomers buying houses in our state are refugees of bad government in places like Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Their history books celebrate things that happened in 1607 and of course, 1620. Florida's first permanent settlement was in 1565. It is called St. Augustine and it is still there.

There is a lot to Florida history, and the Florida Historical Society is a good way to find out about it. A standard membership is $75.00. The society's address is 435 Brevard Ave., Cocoa, FL 32922. Phone # is 321-690-1971, ext 217
