Special to the Herald
Forget packing your bags and waiting in line at the airport. For one day in October, Wekiva Island will transport guests to the tropical islands of Hawaii without ever leaving the Sunshine State.
The Seminole County attraction will host its annual Kona Luau from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5. The event features a hula hoop contest, specials, and tons of Aloha spirit. It is topped off with a traditional fire dancer performance. The Kona Luau marks Wekiva Island’s anniversary each year.
“We’re so excited to celebrate our sweet 16 with this favorite event,” said Carrie Vanderhoef, Wekiva Island manager. “This always marks the official end of summer for us, and every year it gets bigger. We love the feeling of support from our awesome community.”
The hula hoop contest will start at 7 p.m. The fire dancers will begin at 7:30 p.m. There is a $5 charge to enter Wekiva Island. Tickets are not required for the Kona Luau.
In addition to the fun, the Island will be serving up specials, including on Kona Brewing Company brews, and Without a Paddle Café will be open and serving Island favorites.
Wekiva Island opened in 2008 after Bill Weinaug purchased the business. It is now a leader in Seminole County with a mission of art, education and sustainability.
