Oviedo Police Swears in New Officer

Oviedo Police Chief Dale Coleman swore in Shaniya Jernigan, who joins her brother Timothy Jernigan, as a new police officer on Friday, September 13, 2024.

The Chief officially welcomed Shaniya Jernigan to the Oviedo Police Department in the City Council Chambers. She was sworn in by the Chief and pinned by her brother Timothy after the swearing-in.

"I am so proud to welcome Officer Jernigan to the Police Department,” said Chief Coleman. “It’s the start of a great career and a chance  to serve the people of Oviedo.”

Officer Jernigan was born and raised in Sanford where she graduated from Lake Mary High School in 2018. She pursued basketball in high school and played semi-pro for a time. Officer Jernigan was the top of her class at Seminole State and also received the Robbie German Award. She has previously worked for Disney and most recently was a corrections officer for the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. She loves being outdoors, playing basketball and spending time with friends and family. Jernigan’s brother Timothy was sworn in on July 9, 2024.

The Oviedo Police Department prides itself on a healthy recruitment program with incentives for potential officers.

Officer Jernigan was joined by family members, city council members, city staff, police command staff and fellow officers at the ceremony.
