SANFORD — The Seminole High School Athletic Hall of Fame welcomed its Class of 2024 into the fold with an impressive Induction Ceremony before a standing room only crowd at the Sanford Civic Center last Thursday (September 19).
The group was also honored in a halftime ceremony at the Seminole-Lake Wales football game on Friday.
The 2024 Class included eight individuals and the 1979-1980 Boys Basketball Team that has been immortalized in the book, “Three Points Shy”.
Here are the new SHS Athletic Hall of Fame members:
Kadeem Edwards, Football, Class of 2008 _ Kadeem was a starting offensive lineman for SHS's first ever football state championship in 2008. He went on to play division 1 football at Tennessee State University. He was drafted in 2012 in the 5th round and played 5 seasons in the NFL for the Buccaneers, Jaguars, and Cowboys.
Adrian Hillsman, Basketball, Track, Volleyball, Class of 1989 _ 300 Hurdles State Champion; District Champion, Regional Champion, On 4 State Championship Teams, 3x 4x400 Champion, Played in the Finals for Basketball, Still Holds the record for 4x 400 Relay, played Volleyball. Went on to run track and play basketball at Auburn University and played professional basketball overseas.
Bobby Lundquist, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Class of 1969 _ Earned nine varsity letters in baseball, football, basketball. MVP in Basketball his senior year and pitched the state championship baseball game in 1968. Went on to be a star pitcher at Valencia Junior College and the University of Florida before returning to Seminole as a teacher and multi-sport coach. Would go into administration and eventually became Principal at Oviedo High School.
Langston Menefee, Cross Country, Football, Track and Field, Wrestling, Class of 1976 _ Set county record in 330-intermediate hurdles and a member of record-breaking 880-relay team. Enlisted in the Army and completed four year, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Ran track at Seminole Junior College and then started volunteering as a coach in numerous sports and schools and became a Master in the American Taekwondo Federation and spent 39 years with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Department.
Tim Raines Jr., Baseball, Football, Class of 1998 _ He earned 5 varsity letters in football and baseball. He started on the varsity baseball team as a freshman where he made 2nd team all conference. The next three years he made 1st team all conference and the team won three consecutive district championships. Was selected in the 6th round of the Major League draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He played 11 years of professional baseball with three stints in the big leagues. On October 4, 200 played centerfield and his father, Hall of Fame member Tim Raines Sr., played left field for the Orioles becoming the second father and son team to play for the same Major league team.
Dave Rogers, Slowpitch, Fastpitch Softball Coach _ 13-year coach at SHS, started the Fastpitch program and led the 2006 team to 31 consecutive victories and the only District Championship in SHS history until this season.
Troy Turner, Baseball, Football, Wrestling, Class of 1987 _ As a freshman went 25-5, as a sophomore went 33-1 (only loss in the State Final match), as a junior went 28-1 (had to forfeit the Final Match from broken thumb injury he sustained in a semifinal victor), finished as State Runners-up in 1985 and 1986 at 159-pounds, then capped career with an undefeated 171-pound State Championship as a senior.
Kerry Wiggins Sr., Class of 1991 _ Was a star quarterback for three years, before attending Georgia Military and Savannah State. Returned to Seminole County as a teacher and coach, coming ‘home’ to Seminole in 2001 and serving as head coach in many sports, including football. Recently became a City of Sanford Commissioner and head of the Unity Youth Association.
1979-80 Boys Basketball Team _ Under Coach Bill Payne, the team advanced to the State Semifinals with a record of 31-3.Won 5 championships - Rotary Bowl Tournament, the Lion Christmas Invitational and the district, regional and sectional titles.
