At Winter Springs High School, a passion for art and athletics can be seen in Coach Dycus’ classroom.
Having a football coach who teaches art classes may seem an unexpected pairing, so how did Coach gain his interest in playing on the field and on paper?
In an interview with the coach, Dycus said that since nearly the second grade, his mother pushed him to try everything. And he did. From art and the saxophone to football in high school, he did endeavor many activities, finding interest in football and distraction in art.
Coach Dycus and a friend from college eventually began their own graphic design company that printed shirts to fulfill a demand they saw. He loved the business, his artistic skills being put to work and his leadership as the founder of the company. When he left this profession for something more stable, teaching waited there for him.
He had always been a football fan, so he became the coach of Winter Springs High School's team nearly three years ago. As well as Dycus becoming coach, he wanted to inspire students’ creativity and give them a safe space in art. He sees art as an opportunity for kids to escape the rigors of academia and see things in a new way.
As for his students, Coach Dycus sees great things in his football team. He calls each player dedicated and labels them as a good group. Their athleticism is promising, seeing that they've been undefeated since the start of this year’s season.
In the art room, Dycus inspires creativity with unique assignments and congratulation on good work. He gives his art students inspiration to think outside of the box and express themselves.
Coach Dycus is an important teacher to Winter Springs High School, inspiring students as both a coach and an educator.
