Description:
Join Jeanine Taylor Folk Art for a group show with a lens focused on the country’s southernmost state and all its eccentricities – Florida Gothic. A bookend to last fall’s Southern Gothic blockbuster show, Florida Gothic narrows the field of vision to the dark side of the sunshine state.
From the western corner of the Bermuda Triangle to the heart of the Space Coast, the strangeness of the state can be found across the map. Dating back to Ponce de Leon’s obsessive search for the Fountain of Youth and extending to present day pastel saturated roadside motel ruins, dark undertones are far reaching and lend a wellspring of inspiration to five Floridian self-taught artists.
Look forward to an eccentric selection of paintings and sculptures by Alyne Harris, Rick Kilby, Melissa Menzer, Jon Napoles and the late Kurt Zimmerman. Each artist shines a spotlight on what lurks beneath the surface of tannin waters found in their home state and provides a visual key of Florida Gothic archetypes.
