Constitution Day Celebrated at Clock Tower

Constitution Day Celebrated at Clock Tower

Special to the Herald

Citizens recently paused to honor the United States Constitution recently with a brief ceremony in downtown Sanford. Two hundred and thirty-seven years ago, this document, after four months of heated debate, was officially signed into law to the ringing of church bells throughout the city of Pennsylvania. As Sanford Mayor Woodruff remarked, “it is fitting and proper to accord official recognition to this magnificent document, its memorable anniversary, and to the patriotic celebrations which will commemorate the occasion under Public Law 915 designating September 17 through September 23 as Constitution Week.”

On a quiet Tuesday afternoon at the Sanford city clock on Magnolia Square and 1st Street, Art Woodruff, by virtue of the authority vested in him as Mayor of the City of Sanford, Florida, read and signed the City of Sanford Proclamation. He was immediately followed by Sallie Harrison Chapter, NSDAR Regent Dawn Garand who shared the Proclamation of the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners. By such proclamation, citizens are asked to reaffirm the ideals the Framers of the Constitution had in 1787 by vigilantly protecting the freedoms guaranteed to us in this guardian of our liberties, remembering that lost rights may never be regained.

Pedestrians stopped to talk and join members of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in ringing bells of all kinds promptly at 4:00. Participants additionally waved American flags, recited the Preamble to the Constitution and sang “America the Beautiful.” The event concluded with rousing cheers of celebration.
