Monday make-up madness

Monday make-up madness
Photos courtesy of Hagerty High School and Oviedo High School Athletics _ Hagerty High School (team) and Oviedo High School, led by Jerome Curry and Joey Gioia picked up important victories Monday night.

One of the biggest night’s of the 2024 High School Football Season for head-to-head matchups among Seminole Athletic Conference squads had to move to Columbus Day on Monday because of Hurricane Milton roaring through the area, but that didn’t slow down the teams much as there were a lot of points scored.

The biggest game, of course, was in Sanford between longtime rivals and state powers Seminole (6-1, 1-1) and Lake Mary (5-2, 2-0) and it was the visiting Rams pulling off the minor upset, 29-14, and clinching the Class 7A-District 3 title, their first district championship since 2014.

But the neighborhood rivalry was not the only interesting matchup as high-scoring Oviedo stayed hot in easing past Lake Howell, 38-14, and Hagerty also continued its outstanding play with a 32-6 thumping of Lake Brantley.

The other local winner came in Sunshine State Athletic Association 8-man football with Lake Mary Prep winning a track meet over Real Life Christian Academy in Clermont, 69-40.

The week was already different as the games were originally set for Thursday because of the Yom Kippur Holiday and now this week became a short one with most teams playing Friday night.

Here is a short recap of a few games:

Lake Mary 29, Seminole 14

Despite the score, this game was dominated by the defenses and special teams setting up scoring opportunities.

Two of Lake Mary’s touchdowns came about because of a muffed punt and a blocked punt and one of Seminole’s scores came after a blocked punt of its own.

Rams placekicker Emilio Bacardi also had a big game with three field goals and 11 points scored.

All told Lions quarterbacks threw for five touchdowns, to four different receivers, and 348-yards through the air.

The Homestanding Silver Hawks got a pair of touchdowns from Decorie Johnson, who caught a 70-yard scoring strike from Luke Barhorst and also ran for a 55-yard touchdown straight up the middle on a delay.
